now, if only you had calculated the proper ROI (including indirect network effects, of course) in the Kindle & Book column. The fact that you can loan me your book & not your Kindle tips the scales, still, i'm afraid.

I am glad to have a fellow Kindler in the woods with me. I have two similar ideas of using it (1) all the reference materials (not necesarily IT stuff) that an employee at my company would like to have easy, searchable access to, and, (2) a cool, non-FedEx way to distribute very readable copies of Board of Trustees materials.

Grade B-
My experience so far has been that the battery acts up more than I thought it would. Seems like a charge is required once a night instead of once every four days as I had hoped.

Grade A+
The sizable fonts are absolutely wonderful accomodation for my eyes and my colleagues's.

Grade B-
Note taking is not quite as easy since the keyboard is not quite as easy to use.

Grade A
Free web access is surprisingly good, considering it's free and monochrome. I like to track Lucy B's 2173 blog on my Kindle.

Wow, I love giving grades on Kindle features. Oh, and Gavin, I'll give you an A for a well written and judiciously humorous review!

You're an excellent writer, Gavin. I'm sure you know that, but we're in a profession that is somewhat light on good writing. Bravo.

Ha! Michael, sorry.. didn't mean to evoke a wince!

And, of course, you are right. The inclusion of the book on Digital Photography in the list was silly.

My bad. I wanted to use "real" numbers, so what I did was take the stack of "real" books from my night-table, and look up the Kindle costs. "The Digital Photography Book" just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. (It's good book by the way.)

That said, I haven't a clue what it really looks like on the Kindle -- to cure my ignorance I just ordered a sample chapter. (As I mentioned..., this push-button instant gratification is going to be dangerous!)

Perhaps.. just maybe I DO have an "uber-Kindle!" (but I doubt it).

I will say, tho, that the built-in screen saver graphics are quite nice. I think of them as "etchings" however. Obviously designed to look good in limited grayscale.

Regards
Gavin

Update: got the sample chapter -- no pictures! -- It was basically the acknowledgements and introduction. so.. we'll never know.

i winced when i saw you chart - right there under the words "Books on the Kindle are cheaper than paper".

Okay, so I will agree that a the MobiPocket eBook format version of "The Digital Photography book" is less expensive, but lets face it, that is like saying a meatless version of the Triple Whopper at Burger King is cheaper - I mean, no one in their right mind would compare a book with images to the lame Kindle version - or do you have some new Kindle uber version with 256 levels of grey ?
